mustafa popal The soulful vocalization captures the existentially beautiful nature of identity. The ethereal and left-field production captures the abstract quality of identity. Simply a perfect sonic encapsulation of one of the defining elements of what makes us human--identity.

about

Asha Trips is a bassist, vocalist, composer and producer living in Naarm (Melbourne). Their release ‘i.d.’ comprises two tracks and makes up their first solo work; a personal and honest expression exploring identity and self-discovery.

Guided by their love of harmonic colour within sound; they perceive chord progressions and harmony as vivid colours and experiences, and this premise is what lies at the centre of their creativity. ‘i.d.’ follows a narrative of Asha searching for their identity, a resolve to try and break through metaphorical walls to unearth who was underneath.

“During our extended lockdowns in 2020, like so many others I decided to actively spend some much over-due time on learning more about my “true” self. I felt as though I had been squashing down or hiding a lot of aspects of myself for my whole life, which had really stopped me from living my life authentically. I felt very surface-level as a person.”

‘Own Worst Enemy’ is a tense exploration of not knowing yourself and battling with your inner critical voice. ‘I Was Always You’ is a joyful celebration of finally stepping into your true self, particularly as a nonbinary person, feeling the release and expanse of their inner self.

The accompanying video for “I Was Always You”, directed by Athina Uh oh and solely featuring dance artist Blu Jay, is a complete visual extension of the sonic and emotional world Asha hoped to create. It is a celebration of non-binary identity and the joy of feeling no limits on who you are.

“The first track, ‘Own Worst Enemy’ is about never really understanding who I was, as well as living my life having my inner critic being the loudest voice I could hear, which blocked me from so much of myself. ‘I Was Always You’ is about moving into finally getting that understanding, in terms of my identity, gender and more, as well as relating that to other people in understanding we all have such expansive and limitless identities.”

The end result is a genre escaping, vivid and explorative two-track EP that is as honest as it is beautiful. An extraordinarily candid experience that touches on the very human adventure of self reflection and acceptance.
